Ohio is the 2nd highest state in the nation for underage consumption of alcohol. Over 26% of all alcohol consumed in Ohio is by underage drinkers. 40% of people who begin drinking before age 15 will develop alcohol abuse or dependency. A critically important part of the answer in addressing adolescent addiction in northeast Ohio is the widely acclaimed program we offer at New Directions.
New Directions has been honored to receive the following awards:
- 2007 John F. Lewis Contract Provider Agency Award given by the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board of Cuyahoga County;
- 2006 John F. Lewis Treatment Service Award - selected by peer organizations for the second time - as the outstanding treatment provider in Cuyahoga County;
- 2006 Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) statewide “Exemplary Evidenced-Based Practice Treatment Implementation” award.
This record of program innovation and excellence, as evidenced by these awards, has positioned New Directions’ as a national model for treating adolescent addiction.
The legacy of New Directions is a story of effectiveness and results. Its treatment programs have yielded amazing outcomes. On average, 6 months post-admission:
- 61% were abstinent;
- 73% experienced improved family relationships;
- 77% attended community support meetings;
- 81% attended school;
- 81% improved school performance;
- 89% had no new legal involvement.
Recognizing the devastating impact of denying the opportunity for residential treatment to adolescent females, New Directions’ Board of Directors embarked on a $2.5 million capital campaign to build a residential facility dedicated to addressing adolescent females’ individual needs.
With the support of individuals, corporations, and foundations, we proudly broke ground in late June. In addition, this project was funded in part by a grant from The Cleveland Foundation. Once a year, the Foundation provides funds to select nonprofit organizations in Greater Cleveland pursuing major capital projects.
These funds are awarded through a competitive review process. This year, 14 nonprofit organizations applied, of which, 5 were chosen to receive $500,000. New Directions’ is grateful and honored to be one of the chosen for this most prestigious award.
Treatment makes a difference. Recovery makes a life.
